ausform:

please believe me when i say that i understand that sometimes baring your teeth and lashing out feels like the only way to protect yourself from a world that has tried to gobble you up on many occasions (and has taken a chunk out of you once or twice or many times)

i know this is how you survived in the past, i know it has worked for you so far … and i know that you have convinced yourself that self-preservation is worth sacrificing emotion for, intimacy for — that no one can hurt you if you don’t give them a chance to

but this survival mechanism is stunting your growth, it’s shackling you — you have outgrown it and you have to shed it

(listen, when you skin your arm, everything that touches it — even the alcohol that’s meant to keep it clean — inflicts pain. it’s not that everything out there is trying to hurt you, it’s that your arm already hurts. unless you (ad)dress the wound, it isn’t going to heal — it’ll become infected, it’ll fester. clean it although it’ll sting like hell. stick a bandaid on it even though it’s going to hurt to rip it off. in the end, you might be left with a little discolouration, maybe even a scar, but you won’t be wounded)
